Weather Fail

Did hell freeze over?

Welcome to the Goodwill on Mars. Come on inside and browse our great selection of winter gear to keep you warm and toasty on those brisk winter nights. It may be a chilly -196°F outside, but inside the deals are out of this world.

Considering that the lowest temperature ever recorded on the surface of the earth was about -128°F somewhere in Russia, I think it’s safe to say that their thermometer may need a bit of calibration. Of course, in today’s touchy-feely world, it’s possible that this particular Goodwill decided to let its employees display what the temperature felt like to them rather than what it actually was. In the summertime it probably says that it’s 1000° and the first snowflake of winter is likely reported as a snowpocalypse.

The real problem here is that people start to lose faith in the one institution that everyone feels like they can count on. If neon signs no longer tell us the truth about what time it is or what the weather is doing, there really is nowhere for us to turn anymore. Sure, cable news channels may spend more time pushing their own political agendas than actually reporting the news, but we have all been able to turn to flashing signs to at least get some accurate reporting while we are out and about. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. How can we even be sure that it’s actually 7:41 PM? Maybe it’s almost 8 o’clock in the morning.

Once this last pillar of reliability and trustworthiness falls, what’s next? Who can we count on to tell us the unvarnished truth about the world outside? We already know that the Internet is made of cats, so that one is right out. MTV doesn’t play videos anymore, TLC is dedicated entirely to chubby little beauty contestants, and newspapers are only good for lining the bird cage.

Of course, we could always go outside and check for ourselves, but who has that kind of free time? Honey Boo Boo isn’t going to watch herself. Oh well, we had a pretty good run as a species.

Sign Win!

Finally a sign win!

It’s a sign full of win. Or is it? Can we really say that this is a positive indication of where we are as a society? What has the human race come to when municipalities feel the need to put up signs to remind people to use common sense and not do something as stupid as text and walk?

What’s next? Our restaurants going to put up signs that say don’t stab yourself in the eye of your fork? Our shoe stores going to have to remind people to take the paper stuffing out of their shoes before they put them on? Are lamp manufacturers going to have to put warning labels telling people not to stick their tongue in the light socket? Probably.

When you have to warn people to watch where they are going while walking down the streets that they don’t turn into a stain on the front of a city bus because they are too busy checking to see how many “likes” they got on the recent video of their cat that they posted, we, as a society, are indefinite trouble. Of course, this really isn’t all that surprising considering that this generations version of art is taking heavily filtered photos of what they are having or dinner.

There’s an old joke about people who aren’t bright enough to walk and chew gum at the same time. Unfortunately, walking into a mailbox and suing the USPS because you couldn’t be bothered to stop before typing “Walking down the street, LOL” is a very real problem that cities all over the country are going to have to deal with. It isn’t enough anymore to put up crosswalks with LED images of people walking or not walking in order to keep the citizens safe while traversing the urban land scape on foot. No, now we have to remind people to not stare at their phone and we may even find ourselves putting up signs every now and then reminding people to breathe, to blink, and even telling them to alternate their feet while walking in order to ensure that our species makes it to the next generation.
