As far as the Humvee (or HMMWV) goes, the military version is quite different from the civilian Hummers (even the H1), because HMMWVs take JP8 not gasoline. JP8 is like diesel, but a bit different (it's actually aviation fuel used in helicopters). If you take care of the HMMWV and do proper maintenance it actually runs quite well, but sadly since nobody really "owns" any military vehicle it gets used and abused and parts are expensive. Hummers can't even compare to an actual HMMWV because it's not even in the same class of vehicles. It's like trying to compare a cruise ship with an aircraft carrier.
