the thing is, orwell spent a good deal of time in spain during the spanish civil war (he actually volunteered to go there to fight against the fascists, quitting his job as a newspaper journalist in britain). he was eventually wounded and taken away from the front lines. when he returned to barcelona to further recuperate, the nationalists had allied with russian communists, and they had in turn taken over the city, gulaging anybody they thought suspicious. orwell barely escaped the communists to return to britain and write about the experience in a book called “homage to catalonia.” i guess somewhere in barcelona they named a plaza after him. (read, “pl. george orwell”-plaza george orwell- at the bottom of the sign.)
and yeah, that’s a hell of an ironic sign.

George Orwell wrote a book called 1984 about an authoritarian regime that monitors its populace. I think he even coined the term “big brother is watching you” or something similar.

It would be funnier if everyone in the world understood spanish. A sign with some Spanish, a camera and George Orwell on it is only funny to People who speak Spanigh and have read “1984.”

Also, it’s still not very funny.

Plaça de George Orwell really exists in Barcelona. Worth a trip, but don’t try to drive there. Barcelona traffic == FAIL!

Anyone who doesn’t understand this, simply isn’t trying. There are reasonably good translation tools available. Indeed, the Spanish phrase is sufficiently close to English that a person with but a modicum of reading ability should be able to discern the meaning.

Being ignorant of George Orwell is a special ‘fail’ of its very own. He is one the most important authors of the last hundred years. His books (particularly Animal Farm and 1984) sold in the millions, have been turned into multiple films, tribute films (Terry Gilliams, “Brazil” for example), used in popular music (e.g., the international hit single by Eurythmics), multiple radio plays, and have had television series made from them; even the trash-culture “Big Brother” tv series is taken from 1984.

And yes, the sign is funny in a wry, tragic and ironic manner. 1984 was supposed to be a warning, not a prediction.

You don’t need to be able speak Spanish to understand that Pl. George Orwell probably stands for George Orwell Plaza or somesuchlike. Just apply your brain for more than 5 f’ing seconds. Jesus.
And if you’re really that poorly educated to have never heared of George Orwell, ffs, just wiki his name and have a read. Then apply your newfound knowledge to the picture above.

Incidentally, the cameras were put after many complaints by the neighbours, for the G. Orwell Square was frequented by drunks & junkies who were quite a nuisance (noise, piss, vomits and other bodily excretions). Apparently, the cameras are intimidating for them…

… While I agree it’s better for the people living at the plaza, it’s also a sad irony that george Orwell’s square is under camera surveillance

Ugh… yes, most unfortunately.

There are areas, though, which are well served by public transport (Bus, Underground, tramway, even a public bike-hire service).

Unfortunately, I live in a suburban area where public transport isn’t well served

This is really quite funny. Also it is easy enough to understand even if you have not read the book, you really just need to know that George Orwell advocated against surveillance of citizens by the government in the book 1984 that he wrote.
