  6. the thing is, orwell spent a good deal of time in spain during the spanish civil war (he actually volunteered to go there to fight against the fascists, quitting his job as a newspaper journalist in britain). he was eventually wounded and taken away from the front lines. when he returned to barcelona to further recuperate, the nationalists had allied with russian communists, and they had in turn taken over the city, gulaging anybody they thought suspicious. orwell barely escaped the communists to return to britain and write about the experience in a book called “homage to catalonia.” i guess somewhere in barcelona they named a plaza after him. (read, “pl. george orwell”-plaza george orwell- at the bottom of the sign.)
    and yeah, that’s a hell of an ironic sign.

  9. For those that don’t get it.

    George Orwell wrote a book called 1984 about an authoritarian regime that monitors its populace. I think he even coined the term “big brother is watching you” or something similar.

  10. It would be funnier if everyone in the world understood spanish. A sign with some Spanish, a camera and George Orwell on it is only funny to People who speak Spanigh and have read “1984.”

    Also, it’s still not very funny.

    its an awesome book that gives us a troublesome picture of what the world is coming to. omg Orwell knew it decades before it started to happen!
