You don’t need to be able speak Spanish to understand that Pl. George Orwell probably stands for George Orwell Plaza or somesuchlike. Just apply your brain for more than 5 f’ing seconds. Jesus.
And if you’re really that poorly educated to have never heared of George Orwell, ffs, just wiki his name and have a read. Then apply your newfound knowledge to the picture above.

Anyone who doesn’t understand this, simply isn’t trying. There are reasonably good translation tools available. Indeed, the Spanish phrase is sufficiently close to English that a person with but a modicum of reading ability should be able to discern the meaning.

Being ignorant of George Orwell is a special ‘fail’ of its very own. He is one the most important authors of the last hundred years. His books (particularly Animal Farm and 1984) sold in the millions, have been turned into multiple films, tribute films (Terry Gilliams, “Brazil” for example), used in popular music (e.g., the international hit single by Eurythmics), multiple radio plays, and have had television series made from them; even the trash-culture “Big Brother” tv series is taken from 1984.

And yes, the sign is funny in a wry, tragic and ironic manner. 1984 was supposed to be a warning, not a prediction.

Plaça de George Orwell really exists in Barcelona. Worth a trip, but don’t try to drive there. Barcelona traffic == FAIL!

It would be funnier if everyone in the world understood spanish. A sign with some Spanish, a camera and George Orwell on it is only funny to People who speak Spanigh and have read “1984.”

For those that don’t get it.

George Orwell wrote a book called 1984 about an authoritarian regime that monitors its populace. I think he even coined the term “big brother is watching you” or something similar.
