When I was in school my brother had a word problem in maths class along these lines: “Say you have a piece of string 5m long. Divide it into two pieces such that one piece is 1m longer than the other. What are the lengths of the two pieces?”. My brother gave the correct solution, but his teacher insisted that the solution was to divide 5 by 2 to get 2.5 and then add 1 to one side so the solution is 3.5 and 2.5.

My dad had to write to the school explaining that you can’t divide string in such a way as to end up with more string than you started off with.

When my kids start school, if they encounter this kind of BS I will spend the time that they would have been doing the homework assigned teaching them to verbally humiliate the instructor in a respectful and honest manner.

Kid’s do need to understand that some people are stupid, and that they will come across stupid people and be forced to interact with them. It’s best to humiliate them in a manner such that they have no alternative, but to shrink or humiliate themselves further.
